KASSANDRA THEATRE Kassandra Theatre produces drama performances, runs training in theatrical expression and builds bridges between Nordic theatres. Youth Training in Theatre With the support of Ministry of Education and Culture, Kassandra has organized workshops for girls with immigrant and Finnish background since 2004. The workshops aim to bring together youngsters from different cultures, to boost their self-esteem via theatre exercises and to open the gates to the world of theatrefor young participants. From spring 2011 onwards, both girls and boys have been taking part in workshops. Upcoming workshops Intensive course in theatre expression for 12-17 year olds Summer theatre camp for 9-12 year olds The workshops are free of charge! Kassandra’s latest festival International in Nordic Countries was held 7-12 June, in Helsinki. The theatre festival hosted five performances from different Nordic countries, of which one was Kassandra´s own production Antigone, held workshops throughout the week and seminars during the weekend. In total 400 people from Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Iceland participated in the festival. International in Nordic Countries was a unique event in bringing artists from different backgrounds together. During the festival the role of new Nordic residents in the professional performing arts, the role of the theatre in the international and multicultural Nordic societies, interaction between performers and audience, understanding aesthetics, professionalism and cultural literacy were raised up. The festival was a success! Kassandra’s latest production Antigone toured in sprig 2011, having reached 1800 spectators in five cities. Ritva Siikala’s adaptation of Antigone, a text written over 2400 years ago by Sophocles, reached the reality of our times via words, songs and dances from Finland, Africa and Asia.
