The department of Dance and Theatre Pedagogy, Theatre Academy of Finland

The programs for dance teacher and theatre teacher are master programs (60 credits) that are based on BA degree or equivalent background. The main principle of the programs is a profound reflection of art pedagogy; it encourages innovation and exploration in an open and diverse atmosphere.

The program aims at enlarging studentís conception of her/his art field and the possibilities of teaching dance/theatre. It will support the studentís readiness to work as a pedagogue who will develop and renew the practice in the field, and who will have a living relationship to both pedagogy and art.

The programs include a substantial component of research in art education. The interaction between theory and practice, as well as art and science is essential in the programs. Many teachers at the department are postgraduate students and active researchers of art/art education themselves. The programs, thus, are characterized by reflective, questioning and innovative approach to the practice of art pedagogy.

From this approach follows that the students are encouraged to explore their own artistry and pedagogy in relation to the teachers, the other students and to the practice and theory of art/art pedagogy. The programs are based on understanding difference and on supporting diversity.

The students of the department come from diverse backgrounds, many of them having studied widely and worked extensively in the field. Their special interests and strengths are taken into account so that they can develop their individual field of specialization, for example through teaching practice, elective studies, and by choosing their seminar and thesis topics according to their interest.

Essential in the program is also the emphasis on ethics of art pedagogy. Special attention is given to critical reflection upon the traditions, beliefs and myths of art and art pedagogy. The student should become aware of her/his values and attitudes related to art philosophy and to educational philosophy. S/he should be able to take part in an open dialogue about diverse conceptions related to art and pedagogy.

A special character to the program is brought by the co-operation between the two fields: the encounter of dance and theatre opens up new, interesting possibilities. Crossing through the two programs is encouraged when possible.
