Book The book Women from around the world – importing “sisu” was published in October 2010. It was a follow-up to the photograph exhibition of the same name produced in 2007. The book, with text in Finnish, Swedish and English, was supported by the Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the Swedish Culture Fund. The book, like the exhibition, presents eleven women who have moved to Finland from so-called developing countries. An introductory article including statistical data describes the background of the women’s personal stories, and places these narratives and the Finnish situation in the broader context of global migration. Although in terms of their countries of departure the women do not represent the most typical immigrants to Finland, they do share features that make them typical new Finns. The statistical data illustrate the position of women in their original home countries. The book is highly suitable for teaching purposes. This website includes tasks that can be used as teaching material together with the book. These tasks have been planned particularly for use in initial vocational education colleges and in courses of Finnish for immigrants. General themes of the tasks are immigration, multicultural society and working life, and the status and roles of women.
